Methodology

How we review social media tools

We review tools by checking published facts, not by guessing. This page says exactly where our numbers come from and what we have not verified. If that sounds dull, good. A review method should be boring and checkable.

Where our numbers come from

Prices come from each vendor's own pricing page. Where a vendor offers annual billing, we use that rate, because it is their lowest published price. When a pricing page hides its numbers behind scripts or a currency picker, we say the price is unverified rather than repeat a figure from a blog.

User ratings come from G2 and Capterra. We cite the score, the review count, and a direct link to the review page, so you can check any of it yourself.

We read every rating off the page. Not off a blog, and not off a search result. That matters more than it sounds: when we compared the two, not one second-hand figure was exactly right. Buffer gets quoted at 1,031 and 1,071 G2 reviews in various places. The real number is 1,039.

We cite a platform only when we read the score off its own page. Not from a blog, not from a comparison site. Those get numbers wrong, and they rarely say when they last checked. If we could not open the page and see the score, it does not go on this site.

When two platforms disagree, we show you both. Storrito is the clearest example: 4.3 out of 5 on G2 from 14 reviews, but 3.6 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 23. Picking the higher one would be more flattering to the tool and less useful to you.

We ignore ratings with tiny samples. A 5.0 from one review tells you nothing. Below about ten reviews we say “too few reviews to rate” instead of printing a score.

The five things we score

Every review scores the same five criteria, each out of 5.

  1. 1

    Ease of use

How long it takes to connect an account and schedule a first post. Fewer steps and clearer labels score higher.

  2. 2

    Free plan quality

What you can actually do without paying. A free plan that blocks scheduling is worth less than one that limits volume.

  3. 3

    Platform support

Which networks the tool publishes to, and whether that support is full posting or reminder-only.

  4. 4

    Analytics depth

Whether you get per-post numbers, or only a follower count. Tools that explain why a post worked score higher.

  5. 5

    Value for money

Cost against what you get, over three years rather than one month. Per-channel pricing is counted at real usage, not the headline rate.

What we have not done

We have not run a months-long hands-on trial of every tool on this site. Plenty of review sites claim that. Most are describing a pricing page. Our reviews are built from published pricing, official product documentation, and verified third-party ratings, plus direct use of the tools we do use. Where we have not used something ourselves, we do not pretend otherwise.

We also build BuntingPost, which competes with the tools listed here. That is a real bias and you should read us with it in mind. Our answer is to keep the checkable facts checkable: every price and rating links to its source, so you can go and confirm any of it yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Do you get paid by the tools you review?

No. We run no affiliate links and take no payment from any tool listed on this site. BuntingPost makes money from its own plans only.

Do you review your own product?

We do not give BuntingPost a score. It is our product, so any rating we gave it would be worthless to you. We describe what it does and let you compare it against tools that carry independent ratings.

How often is this updated?

Prices and ratings are re-checked quarterly. Every page shows the date its figures were last confirmed. If a date looks stale, treat the numbers as stale.

What do you do when a tool shuts down?

We remove it from recommendations and mark it as discontinued. Crowdfire is the current example. It closed in May 2025, so we do not list it as an option even though its review pages are still online.
