Character limits on every major platform

Every platform counts a little differently, and most of them cut your post off long before the hard limit. The numbers below are the maximums; the practical limits in the next section matter more for how your post actually reads in the feed.

The limit that actually matters is the truncation point

Hitting the maximum is rarely your problem. Getting cut off mid-sentence is. Whatever comes after the cut is only read by people who already decided to tap:

  • Instagram: hides everything after roughly 125 characters behind “more”.
  • LinkedIn: truncates at about 210 characters on desktop, closer to 140 on mobile.
  • Facebook: clips at around 480 characters.

Treat the first line as the whole pitch

Put the hook, the number, or the question up front. Let the detail live below the fold.

A 3,000-character LinkedIn post is fine, as long as the first 210 characters earn the click.

What counts as a character

  • Spaces and line breaks count on every platform.
  • Emoji usually count as two characters, not one, because of how they're encoded.
  • Hashtags and @mentions count toward the limit like any other text.
  • On Twitter/X, links are always counted as 23 characters no matter how long the URL is.

How to use the character counter

  1. Paste or type your post into the box.
  2. Pick the platform you're writing for.
  3. Watch the counter against both the hard limit and the truncation point.
  4. Trim until your hook lands before the cut-off, not just under the maximum.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters is a tweet?
A standard post on Twitter/X is limited to 280 characters. Premium (paid) accounts can post up to 25,000, but only the first 280 show in the timeline before a 'show more' link. The practical limit for anything you want read is still 280.
What is the LinkedIn character limit?
LinkedIn posts allow up to 3,000 characters. The more useful number is the truncation point: roughly 210 characters on desktop and about 140 on mobile before the post collapses behind 'see more'. Your headline is capped separately at 220 characters.
How long can an Instagram caption be?
Instagram captions allow up to 2,200 characters and a maximum of 30 hashtags. Only about the first 125 characters appear before the caption is truncated, so front-load anything you need people to read.
Do spaces and emoji count toward the character limit?
Spaces and line breaks always count. Emoji typically count as two characters rather than one, because most are encoded as surrogate pairs. A caption that looks like it fits can go over once you add several emoji.
Do links count toward the character count?
On Twitter/X every link counts as exactly 23 characters regardless of its real length, so shortening a URL doesn't buy you any space. On other platforms links count as their full literal length.
What happens if you go over the limit?
Most platforms simply stop you from publishing and show a negative counter. The bigger risk isn't the hard limit but the truncation point. A post under the maximum can still be cut off mid-sentence in the feed, which is where the hook is lost.
